The Los Angeles Police Department continues to ask for the public s help to identify women in photographs that were recovered in the possession of a serial murder suspect dubbed by the media as the Grim Sleeper.
Lonnie Franklin Jr., 62, is accused of slaying at least 10 women and dumping their bodies around South Los Angeles in a series of killings that occurred over 22 years.
Investigators say they seized 180 photographs of unknown women from Franklin s home in July of 2010. Police say the photographs were taken between the years of 1976 and 2010.
Franklin s trial date is set for June.

Too bad you own a laptop. Desktop keyboards are easy to fix. Just buy a new one they can cost less than 15 and plug it in.
Since that s not an option, let s start with the next simplest fix: The driver. But first, just to play it safe, create a restore point.
Once you re safe, open Device Manager: If you re using Windows XP, click Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties. Click the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button. In Vista or Windows 7, just click Start, type device manager, and press ENTER.
Find your keyboard under Keyboards. Right-click it and select Uninstall.
When it s uninstalled, select Action, then Scan for hardware changes. This reinstalls the driver.
If that doesn t fix the problem, you need to find out if it s a hardware or Windows problem. Try these two tests:
First, plug in an external keyboard and try using that. If the problem persists, your keyboard isn t the problem.
Next, try working in a live Linux environment. This allows you to boot into Linux from a CD or flash drive, without installing the operating system. I recommend either Puppy Linux, which is small, fast, and easy for Windows users to figure out, or Ubuntu, which is much more powerful. Both download as. iso files. To burn either of them to a CD, double-click the. iso file. If that launches a program, follow the prompts. If it doesn t, download and install the ISO Recorder for Windows XP and Server 2003 or ISO Recorder for Vista and Windows 7. Then double-click the. iso file.
If the problem persists in Linux, you can t blame Windows.
If these tests determine that it s a Windows problem, try System Restore, going back to a date from before the problem started. If that doesn t fix it, I hate to say this, but you may have to reinstall Windows. See Reinstall Windows Without Losing Your Data for instructions.
If it appears to be a hardware problem, you ll probably have to replace the keyboard. You might want to go to a professional for this job, but if you re feeling brave--and lucky--see Fix a Laptop s Sticky, Broken Keys.

In this guide we will teach you how to use the excellent freeware program Media Player Classic to find and add subtitles to your video files that may need them. We will show two different methods of obtaining these subtitles, and then how to play them along with your video.
Requirements
For this guide you will not need much else besides Media Player Classic and a working Internet connection. You will also either need the video file you want the subtitles for or at least the title of the movie, etc. You may also need WinRAR for some files that are packed in. RAR files so I will include that in the requirements.

Getting Started
First Method: You already have the video file
Ok so now that you have MPC installed as well as WinRAR lets move on to the guide itself : The first method we will be going over is how to find and add subtitles if you already have the video file available and downloaded.
With MPC open, take your video file and open it in the program. You can do this by either dragging the file right into the playback window or by hitting Ctrl O and browsing for the file. Once it is open, quickly pause it. You can do that by either clicking on the screen once or hitting the pause button.
Now to get the subtitles, hit File then navigate to Subtitle Database and finally hit Download. You will then be greeted with a Subtitles available online window which will show you all subtitles available for your selected video file. Look through and find the language you want and hit Download and open. From there just un-pause your movie and begin watching, this time with the subtitles of your choice. If the subtitles do not work, or are out of sync, it is always possible to go back and pick out a different one from the list although most work perfectly.
Your movie should now continue on with the subtitles playing. If you want to watch the movie at a later time or have to reboot or something of the sort, you can save the subtitles you just downloaded by going to File- Save Subtitle and saving the file with the name of your choice in the destination of your choice. When you start up the movie again, hit File- Load Subtitle and navigate to where you saved the file. Simple as that.
Second Method: You do not have the video file yet
The second method, if you don t have the video yet but want to get the subtitles in preparation, is almost just as easy. For this part, make sure you have an active Internet connection and then hit File then navigate to Subtitle Database and finally hit Search. You should be led to a web page a new tab in IE or FF called
Open Subtitles
Now that you are at Open Subtitles, you want to search for the movie you are looking for. Take note of the language drop down button and choose the language you are looking for. It should be by default whatever language your browser is in but if it is not then make sure to change it. For my example, I have chosen ENG for English. In the Search bar type in the name of the movie you are looking for and hit Search or just hit enter on your keyboard. You will then be led to a results page.
Working with the results
The results page can be somewhat tricky to decipher so I will go over the options. My results page brought me only 5 options, each exactly for the movie I was searching for. I have highlighted the two important columns see picture at right which are the download column and the rating column. As you can tell from the picture, one of the sub packs has an 8.6 rating and another has an 8.4. The other three have much lower ratings and I would not bother with them. Once you have found the highest rated one, or one that you think will fit your needs, hit the download button which is the only hyperlink in the download column. My example, the download button is 1551x.
Although not highlighted it is also important to note what kind of video file standard your movie is in, either PAL 25.000 fps or NTSC 23.976 fps. You can do this by either right clicking on your file and checking the Properties tab. If it is unavailable that way, please use this guide here to find out the framerate of your file: How to use GSpot for video file details. The framerate of the subtitles will be under the Uploaded column and take note that the subtitles must be the same framerate as the video file or the subtitles will not fit the dialogue. For my example, the video file is in PAL format, so the 25.000 fps subtitle with the 8.6 rating is perfect. When you download, most will be packed in a RAR or ZIP file which is where WinRAR comes in handy. Extract the. sub or. srt file and there is your subtitle file, waiting to be loaded whenever you decide to play the movie. Hit File- Load Subtitle and navigate to where you saved the file.
Changing the Style
You are now done with the main part of the guide, but you now have some small options we can go over. That option is the ability to change the style and placement of your subtitles, although for me the default has always worked great.
To access these options, hit Play then Subtitles and finally Options. From there you will be greeted by the Subtitles portion of the Options menu where you have three options, subtitles, default style and database. Database is just the default database opensubtitles.com so I would recommend keeping that as it is a great resource.
For Subtitles, there are very few options, but it will allow you to override the subtitles programmed placement and put them higher or lower on the screen or on a higher resolution video. I would recommend leaving this as is, unless the subtitles you downloaded are horribly positioned :-D
Now finally the changing style page is where you can play around with the subtitles to your liking. Here you can change the font, add borders, shadow, change the color of the font, change the size, and also move the positioning again. When you are done here, hit Apply and finally OK and you are finally done.
Finishing Up
Ok well that concludes our finding and adding subtitles guide and I hope it was informative. Media Player Classic is a great video player, and I would recommend it for all users who are tired of using bloatware products such as Windows Media Player.
There are also a few terms that I feel are good to read into especially when dealing with subtitles and I will list them here with links to full descriptions. Of course this optional :
.SUB- A. sub file is one of three files that make up a CloneCD Image File. There should also be a. img file and a. ccd file. A. SUB file stores sub channel data on all tracks of the CD. It must be used with the. IMG file and the. CCD file to properly burn the contents to a CD.
.SRT-. srt is the standard subtitle format produced by SubRip and is supported by virtually all subtitle manipulation and playback tools. Recommended player that supports the format is the open source media player Media Player Classic.

A topic of fre quent dis cus sion and con cern in many online forums is Microsoft s Prod uct Acti va tion, which is not lim ited to Win dows XP, it is now required for many Microsoft prod ucts on a per sonal level, MS Office for instance.
Isn t it galling that we need to con tact Microsoft for per mis sion if we choose to rein stall a prod uct that we already legally own and use, and have stamped so before.. This method of copy right pro tec tion has not exactly rol licked among cus tomers. Well, no wor ries, there is a trick for get ting around prod uct acti va tion for Win dows XP when reinstalling.
If you have suc cess fully acti vated the OS already, and if you are rein stalling it on the exist ing hard ware, this trick should do just fine. Here it is:
Copy the file c:windowssystem32wpa.dbl to a floppy.
Rein stall Win dows XP.
Boot to a DOS disk if you are using FAT, or to the Recov ery Con sole if using NTFS.
Copy the file from the first step above back to c:windowssystem32.
That s it because all of your hard ware is the same as before, your copy of WinXP is still valid accord ing to the pre vi ous activation.
That s it. That should do it. For some really cool instruc tions while rein stall Win dows XP, read Mark s dandy but must-read instruc tions Install Win dows XP in 5 hours or less.
When you fix as many computers as I do, you come across some strange things.
When reinstalling Windows, you ll almost always get a message at first log on that you need to activate windows within 30 days or else. Following that you ll have to verify that windows is genuine. But you have to do it in that order. So on Windows XP, there s typically, and almost always first to show up, a blue star icon in the system tray – letting you know that you need to verify if windows is genuine.
Ya well, then you double click it, the genuine test will fail if windows is first not activated. Am I repeating myself. You get the point. For some reason, if you wait, the activate icon will appear. It looks like a set of keys. Sometimes, like in the image, the activate icon will be the system tray. Sometimes it will be in Start All Programs Activate Windows. But sometimes, there will be no option to activate windows at all. THIS is when it gets interesting. In the years I have been working on computers, I have only seen this happen once – and that was today. Mind you, you can t really finish the computer setup without activating. Windows updates won t work – which is key in the Windows world, especially if you need service pack 3, which is almost always the case. But I found the fix, for this instance, and it was pretty easy.
FIX
Fire up a command prompt Start Run type cmd and hit enter. Change the directory to C: if not there by default. Then change the directory to this path: or type in the following cd windowssystem32oobe. Type msoobe.exe /A and hit enter.
It looks like this: C:WINDOWSsystem32oobe msoobe.exe /A
Amazing. The activate windows prompt pops up. Proceed as normal to activate windows.

The essential purpose of any antivirus utility is to protect your PC against viruses, Trojans, ransomware, rogue antivirus, and all other types of malicious software. Some products stop there, while others add various bonus features. eScan Anti-Virus with Cloud Security 29.95 per year definitely falls in the latter group, with firewall and antispam protection thrown in. Lucky for eScan that the spam filter is just a bonus, as it flopped in testing.
The product s main window features five large panels on a world-map background. There s plenty of extra space, because eScan s security suite products use the same user interface, but adds more panels. The panels represent five components: file antivirus, mail antivirus, antispam, firewall, and cloud protection. Each offers some simple stats, such as the number of email messages scanned or the number dangerous objects found. And clicking each panel opens a page that lets you make configuration changes or view logged activity for the corresponding component.

The user interface is a bit dated, and some parts can be difficult to read. In particular, the firewall popup notifications and virus alerts are hard on the eyes, with small print on a pale-blue background.
You can choose to install eScan with or without its Rescue Mode; you can also add Rescue Mode later. Rescue Mode is an alternate operating system that you can boot into if ransomware or other malware makes Windows unbootable or unusable. You ll definitely want to install Rescue Mode, and you ll probably want to turn on antispam and email antivirus, both of which are turned off by default.
Good Lab Results
Not all of the independent antivirus labs that I follow include eScan in their testing, but those that do generally give it good marks. Virus Bulletin included eScan in all of its latest 12 tests and awarded it VB100 certification in 11 of those. ICSA Labs certifies eScan for virus detection.
Germany-based AV-Test Institute assigns antivirus products up to six points in each of three categories: effective protection against malware; low impact on system performance; and low incidence of false positives that interfere with usability. eScan earned 5 points for protection, 5 for performance, and 6 for usability, for a total of 16 points. Note, though, that Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2015 both managed a perfect 18 points.

Products that pass earn a Standard rating; those that excel can earn Advanced or Advanced. eScan would have had an Advanced rating in four distinct tests, but false positives good files identified as bad knocked it down to Advanced in two of those tests.
Lab results for eScan are good overall. However, the very best products, such as Bitdefender and Kaspersky, earn top marks across the board.

Good Malware Blocking
I don t have the staff and resources that the independent labs do, but I like to get a hands-on experience with each antivirus product s malware blocking abilities. eScan turned in a good performance in my tests.
As soon as I opened the folder containing my current collection of malware samples, eScan started wiping them out. In a very short time it eliminated almost 80 percent of those samples. It also caught several of the remaining samples when I launched them. One way or another, it detected 86 percent of the samples, the same as Baidu Antivirus 2015. With 8.4 points for malware blocking, eScan has the best score among the admittedly small number of products tested using my current malware collection. Tested using my previous collection, Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2015 detected them all and earned a perfect 10 points.

Next, I tried launching a collection of newly-discovered malware-hosting URLs supplied by MRG-Effitas. I kept at it until I had recorded eScan s reaction to 100 of these very fresh targets. Its Web protection blocked access to 26 percent of the samples, and the regular antivirus component wiped out another 12 percent during download, for a total protection rate of 38 percent, which is just a hair below the current average. With 85 percent protection, McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015 hold the top score in this test.

I also tested eScan s ability to detect and block phishing websites fraudulent sites that attempt to steal your login credentials for bank sites and other sensitive websites. When site after site slipped past eScan, I double-checked the documentation. It turns out that this product s phishing protection is strictly related to phishing emails. MicroWorld reserves actual phishing protection for its suite products.
Simple Firewall
Most vendors reserve firewall protection for their security suite products, but MicroWorld generously includes it in the standalone antivirus. When I tested the product using port scans and other Web-based tests, it correctly stealthed all ports against outside attack, and also actively identified a couple of the port scan tests.
eScan s firewall also aims to manage programs that attempt Internet or network access, but in its default Limited Filter configuration this feature is rather limited. It monitors inbound traffic and manages it based on predefined rules. If you want full program control, you need to switch it to Interactive Filter. In this mode, when the firewall detects an unknown program attempting network access, it asks you whether to allow or block it, with the option to remember your answer in the form of a rule. Top-notch firewalls like what you get with Symantec Norton Security or Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 automatically assign permissions for known programs and monitor the behavior of unknowns, making their own decisions.
Of course, a firewall can t control Internet access by a program if it doesn t detect that access. Leak test programs exercise sneaky techniques used by malware to get online without being detected. I tried a handful of leak tests; eScan detected just one of them.
When I hit the test system with two dozen exploits generated by the CORE Impact penetration tool, the firewall didn t stop any of them at the network level. However, the antivirus component eliminated the executable payload for a third of the exploits, identifying half of those by name. Norton s firewall identified and blocked all of the exploits.
At least this firewall won t cave to direct attack by malware. It doesn t expose any significant setttings in the Registry, and I couldn t kill off its processes. Its essential Windows services are also protected; when I tried to disable them I got nothing but Access Denied.
This simple firewall does its job, though it s not on par with the very best. And don t forget, this product is an antivirus, so anything the firewall does for you is all gravy.
Disappointing Antispam
The antispam component in eScan doesn t attempt integration with email clients. By default, it filters your incoming POP3 email and marks spam messages by adding SPAM to the subject. You can choose a variety of other ways to mark the spam messages; most users won t. Defining a message rule to divert spam into its own folder is not difficult. eScan also scans incoming messages and attachments for malware
eScan uses what it calls a Non-Intrusive Learning Pattern algorithm to identify spam. It also uses a number of other techniques; for example, by default it marks email using the Chinese or Korean character set as spam. In testing, though, a lot of Chinese-language spam still made it to the Inbox. You can configure the spam filter to treat messages containing specific phrases as spam. There are a number of other advanced settings, but I didn t touch them. Most users will ignore them; they just want spam filtered out and good mail left alone.

In testing, eScan significantly slowed the process of downloading email. It took three times as long to download 1,000 messages with eScan watching for spam as with no spam filter. I also found that I had to turn off the notification system, which wanted to pop up a notification for every found spam message. With all that time spent examining and classifying mail, you might expect impressive accuracy. You d be disappointed.
The spam filter discarded 7.9 percent of valid personal messages, throwing them in with the spam. That s pretty bad; what if one of those messages was the job offer you were waiting for. It also let 28.6 percent of undeniable spam messages into the inbox. The best spam filters don t discard any valid mail, and don t miss nearly as much spam. For example, McAfee only missed 4.4 percent of spam, and Norton only missed 7 percent. It s a good thing spam filtering isn t an essential antivirus feature.

Bonus Tools
Clicking the Tools link at the bottom of the main window brings up a page of bonus tools. eScan checks to make sure you ve installed all essential Windows updates; if you don t, it helps you get them installed. It automatically checks every inserted USB drive for malware, and can optionally vaccinate any USB drive, making it impossible for malware to launch from the drive using AutoPlay.
Sometimes when malware has screwed up Windows, you can fix things by booting into Safe Mode. The usual problem with Safe Mode is that users have a hard time invoking it. eScan takes Safe Mode protection in the opposite direction, allowing you to require a password before Safe Mode can be used. I m not sure how useful this is, but nobody says you have to turn it on.
A Decent Choice
MicroWorld eScan Anti-Virus with Cloud Security gets good scores from the independent labs, and it did well in my hands-on malware-blocking test but not in my malicious URL blocking test. It includes antispam and firewall, components that most vendors reserve for their security suite products. However, the antispam proved ineffective in testing, and the dated user interface can be hard to read. Most users will be better off choosing Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2015, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2015, or Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015, all three of which have earned our Editors Choice.
